English Grammar in Use Fourth Edition. A “must have” for English Language Learners

Raymond Murphy’s English Grammar in Use hardly needs any introduction. It’s the ‘world’s best-selling grammar book’ according to the cover and from the team at BEBC, we could not agree more.

We can also agree that this is a title that will be “in Use” for the rest of your life.

The book has been widely used by English language students, especially those from non-English-speaking countries, as a practice and reference book. The book has achieved a great reader acceptance because of its accuracy.

Though the book was titled as a self study reference, the publisher states that the book is also suitable for reinforcement work in the classroom.

There are two versions of the book (with or without answer key). The book is divided into units, each unit (typically of two facing pages) has the lesson itself on the left page, while the right page contains exercises on that lesson. The book’s units are ordered according to the lesson simplicity; or starts with the basic topics and goes up to more advanced topics. The author advises readers to flip over and find whichever topics they feel they need improvement on.A study guide is placed at the end of the book, which contains exercises that when solved reveal what topics student needs improvement on, and suggests the unit numbers the student should study; and thus the reader can figure out which units to study and which to omit.

The reason for their success is their simplicity. Each double page spread is a unit covering one grammar point or aspect of English. The explanations and examples are on the left and the straightforward exercises are on the right. It retains all the key features of clarity and accessibility that have made the book popular with millions of learners and teachers around the world.

Designed to be flexible, the book is available both with and without answers, making it ideal for self-study, but also suitable for reinforcement work in the classroom.

The main book parts consist of, Present and pastPresent perfect and past, Future, Modals, If and wish, Passive, Reported, Speech, Questions and auxiliary verbs, -ing and infinitive, Articles and nouns, Pronouns and determiners, Relative clauses, Adjectives and adverbs, Conjunctions and prepositions, Prepositions and Phrasal verbs. All of these parts will help the English language learner, especially people studying from non-English speaking countries to improve spoken and written grammar.

This book is an incredible resource for ESL teachers. It is the easiest to understand out of all the grammar reference books I’ve read, providing clear examples in each lessons, accompanied by clear timelines and illustrations. The way Murphy explains the grammar works very well if you’re trying to figure out how to teach it in class; he lays it out in a way that both the teacher and the students understand. Lastly, the exercises are brilliant. They’re varied, follow a clear progression, and serve as a great springboard for further exercises and activities. I own a few more ESL books but this was by far my best purchase.

It’s a great exercise book with with answers. Very useful for foreigners. Each exercise is explained with examples for a better understanding . I would recommend it to anyone 🙂

Murphy’s grammar books have been recommended to me since I started my TEFL course 2 years ago. I love the Cambridge format, one page of explanation followed by a page of exercises. Ideal for self-study, it is also an indispensable tool for the English teacher to clarify particular points of grammar or of expression. I am very glad to have added it to my library and will definitely recommend it to others.

I would highly recommend any learner of English to buy this guide to grammar. It is suitable for Beginners to Advanced and acts as a reference on all aspects of grammatical structure. Students of English will of course need other material, but this does the job on the ‘grammar side’. As a teacher myself, I often refer to it ….wouldn’t be without it.

From these reviews, BEBC would say it is a must have in the library. Its also a huge seller at BEBC, not only because its the world number one selling grammar book but because its available at a Special Offer Price £14.10 – save £6.00** Normally £20.10. https://www.bebc.co.uk/english-grammar-in-use-fourth-edition-book-with-answers-special-offer/9780521189064/
